Red Forest Hotel

Direction: Mika Koskinen
Finland 2011 | 80 min | documentary
Original title: Punaisen metsän hotelli
“They said that the Finns are coming. Even the word ‘Finland’ scares us,” says an anonymous farmer in Red Forest Hotel. The documentary by Mika Koskinen is a harsh depiction of how the shared interests of Finnish forestry company and Chinese local government deprive the farmers of their land and human rights. At the same time, the company is advertising in the biggest newspaper in Finland, Helsingin Sanomat, that they are saving rainforests. The suspicious Chinese authorities don’t leave the documentarians alone and many interviews are interrupted before anyone gets to say a word. The air reeks of lies.
